Silk General Questions

Silk Care Instructions

Here at Yasha Silk we offer Grade 6A mulberry silk with a charmeuse weave in 19, 22 and 30 momme. We understand that choosing the right one for your needs can be perplexing. To simplify your selection process, we’ve crafted an informative blog that delves into the unique characteristics of each momme, helping you make an informed choice.

Momme (pronounced ‘mom-ee’) is a Japanese term used as a unit of weight measurement specifically for genuine silk. It is often abbreviated as ‘mm’ and is defined as the weight in pounds of a piece of fabric that measures 45 inches in width by 100 yards in length. To put this in perspective, that’s approximately the length of a football field!

In terms more closely related to the size of sheets, one momme translates to roughly 4.340 grams per square meter. For instance, eight momme fabric weighs about 1 ounce per square yard or 35 grams per square meter.

The momme value is indicative of the fabric’s weight and density. During the silk production process, the density and yarn count of the silk thread are adjusted by the silk factory to control the fabric’s weight, or momme. For instance, a 30 momme charmeuse pillowcase would have the silk fibers woven closer together in the weft and warp compared to a 19 momme charmeuse pillowcase. Additionally, higher momme silk fabrics are made using thicker yarn. In this regard, momme is akin to thread count, a common measurement used for assessing the quality of cotton sheets.

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is a globally recognized certification and testing system for textiles and fabrics. It is a voluntary certification program that sets stringent limits and criteria for the presence of harmful substances in textiles. The primary goal of Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is to ensure that textile products are safe and free from harmful chemicals for consumers and the environment.

Here are key points about Oeko-Tex Standard 100:

  1. Consumer Safety: The certification focuses on protecting consumer health by ensuring that textiles and fabrics do not contain harmful substances that could be absorbed through the skin, ingested, or inhaled during use.
  2. Comprehensive Testing: Textile products certified under Oeko-Tex Standard 100 undergo rigorous testing for a wide range of potentially harmful substances. These substances can include heavy metals, carcinogenic dyes, pesticides, allergenic dyes, and various chemicals.
  3. Stringent Limits: The certification program sets specific limits and thresholds for each tested substance. Textile products must meet these strict criteria to be awarded the certification.
  4. Global Recognition: Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is recognized and trusted worldwide. Textile manufacturers and brands use this certification to demonstrate their commitment to producing safe and environmentally friendly products.
  5. Product Categories: The certification covers a wide range of textile products, including clothing, bedding, upholstery, and accessories.
  6. Renewable Certification: Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification is renewable and subject to regular retesting to ensure ongoing compliance with safety standards.
  7. Transparency: Certified products often feature the Oeko-Tex label, allowing consumers to easily identify products that have met the rigorous safety criteria.
  8. Environmental Considerations: While primarily focused on consumer safety, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 also considers certain environmental aspects, such as restrictions on the use of environmentally harmful chemicals in the production process.

A charmeuse weave is a type of weave pattern used primarily in the production of silk fabrics, although it can also be used with other materials like satin. Charmeuse is known for its luxurious, smooth, and shiny surface. Here are some key characteristics of a charmeuse weave:

  1. Smooth and Shiny Surface: The hallmark of charmeuse fabric is its glossy and lustrous surface. It has a beautiful sheen that reflects light, giving it an elegant and luxurious appearance.
  2. Bias Cut: Charmeuse is typically woven on a bias (at a 45-degree angle to the warp and weft threads), which contributes to its distinctive drape and fluidity. This bias cut allows the fabric to have a natural stretch.
  3. Soft and Silky: Charmeuse fabrics are incredibly soft and smooth to the touch, making them comfortable to wear against the skin. This softness is due to the use of fine, high-quality silk fibers.
  4. Delicate: While charmeuse is luxurious, it can also be delicate and prone to snagging or running if not handled carefully. It’s essential to treat charmeuse garments with care to maintain their beauty.
  5. Versatile: Charmeuse fabrics are versatile and are used to make various clothing items, including evening gowns, lingerie, blouses, and scarves. Its drape and sheen make it a popular choice for elegant and formal attire.
  6. Single-Sided: Charmeuse typically has a shiny, smooth surface on one side (the “right” side) and a matte finish on the reverse side (the “wrong” side).

Silk is typically graded based on the quality of the silk fibers, and one common grading system uses letters and numbers to indicate the quality. The grade 6A is a high-quality grade in this system, and it’s often associated with some of the finest silk available. Here’s how silk is graded, and what grade 6A means:

  1. Grading System: Silk grading typically uses letters (A, B, etc.) and numbers (1, 2, etc.) to classify silk. The letter represents the quality of the silk fibers, while the number indicates the category within that quality grade.
  2. Letter Grades: The letter grades generally range from A to C, with “A” being the highest quality. Grade A silk is characterized by long, uniform, and smooth fibers, which contribute to its exceptional luster and texture. Grade B and C silks have shorter and less uniform fibers and are considered lower in quality.
  3. Number Categories: Within each letter grade, there are numerical categories. For example, grade A silk may have categories like 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A. In this case, 6A represents a higher quality within grade A.
  4. Grade 6A Silk: Grade 6A silk is considered one of the highest quality silk grades available. It features long, uniform, and very fine silk fibers, resulting in a smooth, lustrous, and luxurious fabric. Grade 6A silk is often used for making high-end silk products like bedding, apparel, and accessories due to its superior texture and appearance.
  5. Mulberry Silk: Grade 6A silk is typically associated with Mulberry silk, which is produced by silkworms (Bombyx mori) that feed exclusively on Mulberry leaves. Mulberry silk is known for its exceptional quality and is the most common type of silk used in the textile industry.

At Mulberry Park Silks we only use Grade 6A long strand Mulberry Silk with a charmeuse weave, so you can rest assured that you are purchasing the finest silk available.

Suzhou Yasha Silk Technology Co., Ltd. is located in Suzhou, China. It is a factory specializing in the production of silk products with a history of 18 years.

It’s worth noting that China is renowned for producing the highest grades of top-quality silk. With a rich history of silk weaving dating back to 2640 BC,

Yes, you can.

  • Use cold water and select the gentle cycle on your washing machine.
  • Avoid using bleach or fabric softener during the wash.
  • After washing, opt for air-drying by hanging the silk items on a line.
  • If you need to use a dryer, ensure it’s set to a no-heat or delicate setting.

Absolutely! While all our silk sheets and pillowcases at Yasha Silk can be safely machine washed, opting for hand washing your silk pillowcase is an excellent choice. It’s a quick and easy method that ensures extra care and protection, preventing any potential damage that can occur in a washing machine

No need for dry cleaning; our silk is perfectly suited for both machine and hand washing.

Unfortunately, we we do not recommend Woolite.

While Woolite has been a trailblazer in the realm of affordable gentle detergents, it’s important to consider that as time goes on, the abrasive elements in Woolite may not be the optimal choice for delicate silk fabrics.

We recommend using an enzyme-free detergent formulated for silk.  Regardless of your choice of detergent, please verify that it does not contain the following common enzymes: Although these enzymes are effective against various stains, they break down proteins, and since silk is primarily a protein-based fiber, these products are not suitable for use with silk fabrics.

If handwashing:

  • Turn Bonnet inside out (shiny side in)
  • Be sure to use an Enzyme-free detergent
  • Add a tablespoon of Enzyme-free Detergent to cool water in a basin or sink
  • Agitate Silk in Water
  • Rinse until water runs clear
  • Hang to Dry away from direct sunlight (Never use a dryer)

If machine washing:

  • Turn Bonnet inside out (shiny side in)
  • Use a small mesh bag designed for delicates
  • Be sure to use an Enzyme-free detergent
  • Chose a cool water delicate cycle
  • Hang to Dry away from direct sunlight (Never use a dryer)

The lifespan of silk sheets greatly varies based on a number of factors, from how often they’re used to the way they’re cared for. Alternating them with other sets or using them sparingly can prolong their longevity. For a comprehensive insight into this topic, please refer to the provided blogs.

Silk is a delicate fabric, and it’s important to take special care when washing it to ensure it maintains its luster and longevity. The best pH for washing silk is close to neutral, which is around a pH of 7. Water that is too alkaline or too acidic can damage silk fibers.

Water Types:

  1. Tap Water: In general, using clean, lukewarm tap water is suitable for washing silk. Just make sure it’s not too hard or too soft. Water hardness can vary by region, and excessively hard water may contain minerals that can build up on silk and affect its texture over time. If you have very hard water, consider using distilled or filtered water.
  2. Chlorinated Water: Avoid washing silk in chlorinated water, such as swimming pool water, as chlorine can weaken and damage silk fibers.
  3. Saltwater: Silk can be damaged by prolonged exposure to saltwater, so it’s best to avoid wearing silk in saltwater environments or washing it with salty water.
  4. Distilled or Filtered Water: If you’re concerned about the quality of your tap water, you can use distilled or filtered water to wash silk. This ensures that there are no impurities or minerals that could harm the fabric.
