It is often abbreviated as ‘mm’ and is defined as the weight in pounds of a piece of fabric that measures 45 inches in width by 100 yards in length. To put this in perspective, that’s approximately the length of a football field!

In terms more closely related to the size of sheets, one momme translates to roughly 4.340 grams per square meter. For instance, eight momme fabric weighs about 1 ounce per square yard or 35 grams per square meter.

The momme value is indicative of the fabric’s weight and density. During the silk production process, the density and yarn count of the silk thread are adjusted by the silk factory to control the fabric’s weight, or momme. For instance, a 30 momme charmeuse pillowcase would have the silk fibers woven closer together in the weft and warp compared to a 19 momme charmeuse pillowcase. Additionally, higher momme silk fabrics are made using thicker yarn. In this regard, momme is akin to thread count, a common measurement used for assessing the quality of cotton sheets.
